Goodbye Christopher Robin (movie review)

Image
It's shocking when we see make believe come alive. It's never quite what we expect. The same may be said of the new movie "Goodbye Christopher Robin" (out in theaters October 13). This is the background story of A.A. Milne and his family, including his wife and son, Christopher Robin. With a name like Christopher Robin and a father who wrote about Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends and their adventures in the 100 Acre Woods, one would think that child would grow up in a fairy tale-like environment. One would definitely not think his family would be afflicted by PTSD or postpartum depression (although the latter is not specifically mentioned in this film, I cannot help but believe that is some of the underlying issues). One does not think of the overwhelming fame such a lad would face. And yet....fairy tales do always seem to get warped. Goodbye Christopher Robin tells the real tale of the Milne family -Blue (A.A.), Daphne, and Billy Moon (Christopher Robin), alo...

Race to Win (movie review + giveaway)

Image
I was an avid watcher of the original Beverly Hills 90210 as a child (don't judge me). That's where my love of Luke Perry kicked in, aided immensely by the movie 8 Seconds. I've seen very little of him over the past decade so was pleased to learn he was in the movie "Race to Win." However, my disappointment kicked in when he DIED (not a spoiler - in the movie description) at the start. He was off and on during the rest of the film but not in a main character way that would showcase his acting. So if you're looking for a Luke Perry film; this is not the one you want. BUT! That doesn't mean you should write this movie off entirely. Danielle Campbell plays his daughter who rallies things together on their ranch so they don't have to sell it to the bad guy. I don't want to give too much away because it is a good movie to watch, but just know there are trials! Another disappointment is that there is no mention of God in this movie. I was expect...

Greater (movie review)

Image
Sports movies are some of my favorite ones; even better if they are underdog stories! "Greater" is just that - a true underdog story about Brandon Bulsworth who could be called the greatest walk-on in the history of college football. The movie follows Bulsworth from the time he's a kid. His mother is raising he and his brother (who is quite a bit older; old enough to be mistaken for his dad, laughably). His brother gives him a kick in the pants when Brandon claims he wants to play for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Brandon was a heavy kid so no one really thought it would happen. However, Brandon worked as hard as he could and made it. Walked on the team and caught the attention of his coach who put some amazing work into this kid to help him become better. I love when coaches look at the heart of a player more than ability. This really is an amazing story, an amazing movie - full of inspiration and encouragement. Things that seem impossible become possible. The rea...

Woodlawn starring Sean Astin & newcomer Caleb Castille opens October 16 (movie review)

Image
Woodlawn is this amazing story of how Jesus Christ helped a football team overcome racial tensions after their school was integrated in the 1970s. It's based on the true story of the Woodlawn High School football team whose teammate, Tony Nathan, became the first real African American superstar. Sean Astin (best known for Rudy ) plays Hank, a guy who went to a Billy Graham revival in Texas called the Jesus Revolution and just really felt lead to share Jesus in Birmingham, Alabama during one of the hardest times of racial tensions in the United States post-Civil War. Hank comes to the football coach, Tandy Gerelds (took me the whole movie to figure out they weren't calling him "Candy."), to ask about coming to share his faith with the team. The coach says no, this is a public school. Then a fight breaks out between races and the coach gives Hank five minutes. Those five minutes turn into an hour and after that, Hank asks if any of the team wants to start li...

Signed Sealed Delivered: With Love From Paris (Hallmark movie premiere review)

Image
Back in the day, I loved Martha Williamson's tv show, "Touched by an Angel." Who didn't?! Well, she has a tv series on the Hallmark channel: "Signed Sealed Delivered." This series is expanding into a movie series and "Signed Sealed Delivered: With Love From Paris," premieres TONIGHT, June 6 at 9pm ET/PT (8pm CST) . image via Grace Hill Media Here is from the press release:  Williamson’s signature laugh-while-you-cry style is evident in her highly anticipated new movie   SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED: FROM PARIS WITH LOVE . Lead postal detective Oliver O'Toole is a man of faith whose wife has left him to pursue her dreams in Paris. In this inspirational story, his wife returns to explore the fate of their marriage on the same day the POstables deliver divorce papers to another couple grappling with the true meaning of love and the sanctity of marriage.     Primetime television veteran Poppy Montgomery ("Without a Trace") guest-stars ...

The Identical starring Ashley Judd, Ray Liotta, and newcomer Blake Rayne opens today (Sept 5) (movie review)

Image
Ashley Judd seems to be favoring family films these days: Dolphin Tale, Dolphin Tale 2, and The Identical which opens today, September 5, nationwide. I had the great honor to screen this movie (yes, before it opens!) from home. image via christiancinema.com The premise is that during the Depression, twin brothers are separated by a great sacrifice. One is raised by their biological parents and the other by a pastor and his wife. The son raised by his biological parents, Drexel Hemsley, rises to the top of rock and rock fame! The other, Ryan Wade, struggles to keep peace between himself and his father and still love music like his brother sings (although he doesn't know it's his brother). I really like the concept of The Identical. How two people biologically related but separated at a young age can still be so alike. It begs the question of nature vs. nurture - where you see Drexel drinking and the pastor's kid (PK) not wanting to touch alcohol but where they both s...

Celery Night Fever (Veggie Tales movie review)

Image
Since I'm an adult and don't have the perspective of a child, I thought I'd let my boys tell you what they liked about the movie. image via Amazon Squirt said: Bruce Onion having to be forgiven. Moose said: My favorite part was being forgiven. Celery Night Fever is about a band, the Groovy Brothers, who were at the top of their game and due to selfishness and unforgiveness broke up. Lanny (Larry the Cucumber) had a granddaughter, Laura (the Carrot), who wanted to save Celery Park, where they used to perform, from Bruce Onion (voiced by Terry Crews). So she got her grandpa to put the band back together. This Veggie Tales production is about forgiveness. As much as I love the message, I think it was lacking in the biblical perspective I love about Veggie Tales. God wasn't mentioned until the very end of the show and there was no Bible story in this one. I know Veggie Tales has gone more toward moral stories than biblical stories, but I miss Esther and David a...

Noah the movie (review & GIVEAWAY)

Image
I have posted about Noah (starring Russel Crowe) and then stopped when it got really controversial. Then I was asked to review the movie and host a giveaway. Well, all this controversy got me curious and I asked Big A about whether I should watch it. He said yes, for entertainment. So I just want to preface this review by saying this movie is purely entertainment and very very very very very loosely based upon biblical and historical accuracy (very very loose). Noah has an interpretive spirit to it that made me talk a lot during the whole movie (what? How did that...? That didn't....), probably to Big A's dismay (just kidding, he's used to me talking during movies). There are things I like about this movie (the cast!) and things I definitely disagree with. Disclaimer: spoilers ahead. I do not like how God is portrayed as unfeeling, uncommunicative (silent), unmerciful. When the Fallen Angels/The Watchers want to help man after the fall, God said no so they went against ...
