Star Wars

Image
It started about a year ago when I watched the original (albeit newly remastered - hey, it was on a garage sale) Star Wars trilogy with my boys. They could have cared less except it was tv. The past year has mostly been about superheroes. And I know the difference between the Marvel and DC Universes. I do. And most of my friends think I'm a little crazy (unless we're playing Jeopardy and it's a superhero question - bring it on!). But my friend Erin gets it. Hilarious as I was getting on here to write about how much my children love Star Wars, I click on the blogs I follow and see Erin has written about this very thing . So my kids didn't really care about Star Wars even when we had a Star Wars themed birthday party for them. And then the library kicked in and we started to read books about them. My husband likes to say that if we have 30 books checked out from the library, 25 of them are Star Wars. I'm talking Level 1-4, craft books, movies, pop up books, boa...

Raising Boys by Design by Gregory L. Jantz, PhD and Michael Gurian

Boys. If men are from Mars and women are from Venus...where exactly are boys from? They are definitely a type of their own, right boy moms? I have read many books concerning boys and raising them and shepherding them and teaching them and disciplining them. I'm well-read (and getting to be well-experienced in the 0-6 age group) about boys. Having read so many books, I will say that "Raising Boys by Design" by Gregory L. Jantz, PhD and Michael Gurian is probably the most boring I've read. They have the right idea with the subtitle "What the Bible and Brain Science reveal about what your son needs to thrive." But the actual writing in the book did not hold my attention well. Here are the few things I gleaned from this book. When boys are at rest or zoning out, their brains mostly are in a resting state. Girls' brains, in opposition, still have much activity even in a resting state. My question to this is then, is it possible for boys to obey right away...

His Mighty Warrior by Sheri Rose Shepherd (review)

Image
I'm a little behind on my reviews, so I'll apologize now for the lack of personal posts for the next few days. Once I get pictures uploaded, I'll share some of my cutie boys with you! We've been reading "His Mighty Warrior: A Treasure Map from Your King" little devotions book in the mornings. I guess, we've been off schedule a little with the holidays, but I really enjoy opening my day with my sons by reading The Word in a way that is age-appropriate for them. "His Mighty Warrior" is just that: a letter to my boys from their Father in heaven. image via I love how boy this book is. There's a pirate on the front, maps in the book. All the pages are rugged like a map or have a compass on them - all about exploration. And that's what I want to show my boys; that Jesus wasn't just a nice guy. He was a warrior, He was manly, He was strong! I think too often, our young men see Christianity as a feminine religion whereas it's full...

MOB (Mother of Boys) Blog Hop

Image
Hi MOB Society ! I am Randi aka S Club Mama. On the S Club 4 blog you will find posts about God/faith, motherhood, autism, silly boys, and reviews and giveaways (right now I'm giving away a MyMiBelle Pacifier Pocket ! This is a super useful product if you have a pacifier baby or as a shower gift!). I am a SAHM of two young boys. I enjoy reading (I majored in English in college), watching movies (just saw Captain America & Harry Potter at a drive-in!), and running (training for my 3rd half marathon in September). I'm the president of the women's ministry team at my church - so excited about our upcoming year as we strive to connect the women in our church. I've been a Christian for several years but feel like I'm really just digging deep into my relationship with Jesus Christ - it's amazing. I've been married to the best husband ever, Big A, for 5 years here in about a week. We've moved 6 times in those 4 years but finally feel like we're going ...

surviving summer

Wow! It's been hot here! I had a friend ask me before church how I keep my two boys entertained during the day. Made me think about it, for sure, so I thought I'd share my ideas. - We head to the park early (8-10am) - We hit the air conditioned library - I had the boys hit the thrift store with me (I shopped for clothes, they played in the toys) - They play trains, cars - the norm around here - We have a great easel that we put to good use (thanks Jaesi!) - watercolor paints (thanks Gina!) - although to be honest, my boys paint one picture and are done but it helps a lot - read books - lots and lots of books. Don't like reading kid books? Read them what you're reading! The Bible, a magazine. As long as it's not inappropriate, they are all words to them. - bounce house/ball pit (thanks Mom and Amber!) - some time this week I'm going to pull out the slip n' slide in the evening; we have some great shade in the early evening. - Audio books - get CDs ...

Squirt waiting for Mommy & Daddy to run by.  The half marathon started & ended at Trails & Rails Museum in Kearney, NE. So of course, we had to check out the train. This is me and the boys looking out of the engine. Choo-choo! I love their hair blowing! And now Moose's preschool senior pictures. ha! Such handsome boys I have! Thanks to my dad, Randy, for taking all of these great pictures!

go go go

Image
Moose loves to run.  One of his favorite phrases is "go go go!"  You can attribute this to the movie Cars or just his love of all things that go  (they probably correlate somewhere in there).  It's such a blast to see the love he gets out of running. Squirt pretty much loves to do whatever it is that Moose does.  Running is #1 on his list, too.  He seems to run for a reason beyond pure joy:  generally taking a toy from his brother and well... running like he stole it.  This cape is such a wonderful toy for the boys.  I put it on them and instantly, you see a change in their face and attitude.  It's as if they believe they are invincible.  Everything about them lights up.  It's amazing the effect a piece of cloth can have on a little boy  (and perhaps a little girl?).  I can only hope my own running can someday bring me such unequivocal joy. Perhaps I need a cape... Join my friend, Erin from Home with the Boy...

Wordful Wednesday: brotherly jam session

Image
I love that my boys, especially Moose, love music. Squirt has recently started to dance - SO much fun! Moose has really good pitch when he sings and loves guitars & drums. Squirt likes to hit things so he's a natural drummer. What a joy this is for a mama who also loves to sing.

Seeking Joy (guest post)

Image
Good morning to you all! Today is Friday and this is my last guest poster, Erin. We became friends through MOPS and now are bloggy friends. She is really amazing so I'll stop writing and let her! 6:30 a.m. Are they SERIOUSLY awake already?! Yes, I admit this thought crosses my mind quite frequently when my two tow-headed little boys get out of bed before my mind is functioning properly. Not a great start to the day admittedly, but I'm just being honest here. And that's when I need to head to my knees. Even better, get on my knees BEFORE they get up. Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. ~Psalm 127:3 After worshipping my Lord in the morning, I want this to be the next prayer from my lips. A reminder of just how blessed we are to have these young men. A chance to focus on the beauty of motherhood, instead of the chaos and craziness that only moms of boys can understand. An opportunity to discover alongside them the joy in simple, everyd...

a day at the park

Image
As Squirt sits nicely in the swing, content as can be... Moose journeys down the slide. All seems well enough. Two boys playing at the park. Then one finds dirt. While the other is still just hanging out. Then big brother decides to push his baby (in the swing). And baby brother decides to push the big brother (from the swing). (just kidding, Moose just laid down...but that's how it looks, huh?) Then big brother finds dirt...again. That's our typical day at the park.

my texter & ladies' man

Image
Squirt has a fond appreciation (or possibly an obsession) with trying to get the most used devices in our home: i.e. computer keyboard, cell phones, remote controls, Wii controlers, and the toilet flusher. Generally speaking, I don't allow him any of this because it does become an obsession when he gets it (just like when Moose was littler). However, at their birthday party a few weekends ago, I gave up momentarily. Big A was sick so I was handling the children (and hosting the party) by myself. So when his Auntie Alyson gave him her cell phone, I was like "whatever." And he was ecstatic! Moose is a ladies' man. Always has been (despite old people constantly mistaking him for a girl - btw that's a BIG girl, people). Here are a few of his crushes of late. Miss J, of course. He has had a love affair (or possibly just a BFF affair) with her since...he started walking, I'd say. He loves her mom and dad (which is good), her siblings don't really seem t...

about my kids

Image
Somebody thought water colors were face paints. That same somebody doesn't mind paper "monies" as long as he can put it in a piggy bank. The other little somebody is pulling himself to standing (and has cruised a few times toward his brother and/or his toys). The same somebody also likes spaghetti baby food (and any scrap of paper he deems eatable on the floor). So far today, I've taken a small portion of foil, a small stamp for a Magna-Doodle, numerous bits of paper, and a crayon out of his mouth. I just realized I haven't shared pictures of the boys lately. Don't worry, they are as cute as ever!
