Lincoln half marathon recap (very late)

Image
Holy cow, I just realized I haven't done my recap from my half marathon in Lincoln in May!!! I know you've all been on pins and needles....or not. But I'm going to tell you anyway. If you recall, I got back from the Philippines on April 30, sick as a dog. The half marathon was on May 7. Yay - NOT. After I got my Rx drugs to make me feel better, I did feel better, but I hadn't ran in nearly two weeks. Good for my toe, bad for my lungs/legs/goal. I was still gunning for a 2:00:00 finish; my coach and husband and friends and family assured me I could still do it. I had too much sun the day before the race - on an extremely HOT Saturday. I had a great supper and night with some friends we stayed with (bless their hearts for letting all 4 of us crash there). I slept on Squirt's little mattress while the brat (said in good fun) stole my couch. Ugh. Anyway it was raining when I woke up to get ready but the rain didn't last. I found my pace group and talked with a...

Omaha half marathon recap

Image
Sunday, September 25, 2011 marked 7 years of Big A & myself. It also marked our second round of the Omaha half marathon (last year's recap here and here )! The morning was chilly but seemingly warmer than last year. I was still pretty jazzed from my Biggest Loser experience , so I was feeling really good. Tired though...here's that back story. On Saturday, Big A & I took the boys up to my sister's dorm room in a nearby town. She had agreed to watch the boys for us. We were almost there and Squirt threw up. Great. Big A decided to take the boys home and I would stay to run. So my sister went with me to the spaghetti supper (yeah, Big A missed the BLs) and during the supper, Big A called: "hey do you think Pookie (my lil sis) would mind coming down here [2 hours away] to watch the boys? Squirt has been fine since we left." So after a semi-quick Walmart stop (to pick up birthday gifts for my nieces & nephew), Pookie & I went back down to Kansas. Th...

Biggest Loser

Image
If you've known me for awhile, you know that I love (LOVE) The Biggest Loser. We started watching in 2007, off and on Season 3 & 4. I remember watching Caroline Rhea as host but not much else about the season; I don't even remember Kim as a trainer. The next year, we really got in to Season 5 (the one with Ali Vincent as the first female winner). And from there I've been hooked! Big A says I always get very involved in what I watch. It's true. I get really freaked out by scary movies because I'm so in to them. I get very much into The Biggest Loser in the same way; I just have my favorites and I want them to win. I dislike when something is unfair or someone is rude. I'm the sucker with my mouth wide open at a "shocker" that Big A saw coming a mile away. All that to say, I was psyched when Amy & Marty Wolff from BL Season 3. I didn't watch Season 3 but they were on last year's Thanksgiving recap episode. I've read articles about...

Buffalo County Stampede Half Marathon

Image
This is me just before I finished in 2:11:00 - awesome! I know I look dorky with the waterbottle stuck in my shirt/sports bra, but that's how I roll. I really really hate carrying water. I also do not like my profile. I'm not sure how I feel about my hydration belt either. It bounced so badly at the start of the half, I had to dump my back two water bottles within the first 3 miles. Ugh. Should've gotten a medium belt but then Big A would never be able to use it. My shirt is also cute but too short to wear with the belt. It kept un-tucking and annoying me. This is Big A just before his 2:12-13:00 finish. That's right, folks. I beat him! Don't look to that happening again, but it felt really good. He started out so fast that I think it just hurt him. His first two miles had to be about 8-8:30 minute miles. Then, of course, his poor nipples. He wants to shave and use band-aids. I want him to not shave and use Body Glide. The route was nice and flat! A little headwi...

my weekend post written while Squirt plays with trains & in the midst of packing...

Image
his head looks huge LOL but he was leaning forward, in his defense. And he's still adorable!  This weekend Big A & I are running our first race of the season: a half marathon. I'm nervous, as always, and excited. The weather should be pretty cool (in comparison to the heat we had last week), the route should be flat (!!!!), and so the wind is the only unknown factor. Any way, I'm hoping that with the flatness of it, I should be able to run a little faster than I have lately. Moose is doing really well in his "summer" school 2x a week. He always says he has fun, so that's good. It's funny, he eats breakfast here, goes there at 8:15 and has another breakfast. I'm ok with it because he normally has a morning snack and they don't there. So then we just eat an earlier lunch for him when he comes home. And I still have 2 days a week to just spend with Squirt - not that today means much as I've been packing for the weekend all morning. I hat...

13.1 treadmill miles

Image
My foot has been aching when I run so I moved my New Year's Eve Treadmill Half Marathon up to this past Sunday so I could suck it up and then rest my foot. I don't know if that's a smart move but it worked out for me! I started running while the boys napped, so Big A moved the 'mill to the living room so I could watch Netflix while running. Well...our computer doesn't get loud enough to hear and Netflix offers ZERO captions on their instant movies, so I ended up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Hulu instead. That lasted for not even an entire episode before Squirt decided he needed to wake up (he's been a terrible napper lately <2 hours). So I moved BACK to the bedroom and put in "Fireproof." I love this movie, I sure do! However, it's not a running movie...I was struggling, so I popped in "National Treasure" (and wished I hadn't sent back Eclipse before I ran this distance). It worked (mostly). I didn't run the half in ...

New Year's Eve Goal

Image
I am going to run a 1/2 marathon on my treadmill! I do not like running on my treadmill SO I decided that I need a goal. While running 7 miles last night on my 'mill, it came to me: run a 1/2 marathon on New Year's Eve on the treadmill. I'm actually really excited. It's quite the challenge! I plan to hook our VCR up so I can have a VHS movie play, then a DVD. It's not going to be a normal 1/2 where I try to run it as fast as possible. I plan to run it in 12-minute miles so it will take me much longer than my first 1/2, but I've given myself leeway on the treadmill. I don't need to go fast; I have no speed to prove. I just want this to be a challenge (and adding a time limit would be biting off more than I can chew). What are your goals for the end of the year? It's not quite time for New Year's Resolutions but it's coming up and the best way to prep is to start planning now!  Do you have problems on the treadmill too? Consider joining me o...

Marathon Pictures!

Image
My sister uploaded her pictures from the marathon to Facebook and I fiddled around (spent way too much time) on Picnik to make them prettier! This is mile 13 so we're almost finished. It definitely gave me a boost to hear my mom yelling "Go Randi!" (one time in my life I was very glad she's so loud). I started to choke up when the boys saw us (and started to cry for us/me) but then remembered I still had to finish so I needed to breathe. The tears definitely put a kick back in my step (maybe they should have been at mile 10?) and I picked it up for the finish line. After we crossed the line (holding hands...so I teared up again), a nice Marine put my cool medal around my neck.  The boys were, of course, upset when we didn't stop for them. So they fed Squirt some crackers (notice his sweet crocodile tears).  And Moose came to meet us as soon as he could. That's about when I finally lost it, when I hugged him and my little sister.  Then we tried to r...

race report preview

I don't have any pictures to share (although I looked smashing) but hopefully my family will email me some soon so I can show you all! This morning was so cold it caught your breath. And when I shed my jacket, it was worse. After we started, I didn't feel cold until the end (when I was freezing). The course was supposed to be really hilly and I was scared, but it wasn't very bad (we think that it's because we trained on semi-hilly terrain). The worst part about the race was stopping at the first water stop about 2 miles in to use the porta potty. I even used one before we started but things get to moving....you understand. Took 5 whole minutes (lots of people, 2 portas) to get back on course. But once we did, I didn't feel like walking until the very end. Even when we had to go up this mile-long hill (not super steep, just long). I wasn't going super fast...never did the whole race (and I was very snail-ish at the end), but I didn't walk at all. That was ...

failure or acceptance?

Since I began telling everyone about running a marathon, so many have told me I "should" run a half before I run a full. It's probably true. It's probably smart. And it's most definitely true for me. Today I decided that a half marathon is much more do-able for me right now. There are various reasons. The price of the marathon vs. the price of a half marathon. It's not much of a difference but when you are just getting by (and you have two kids in diapers), that difference makes a difference. I'm also hoping that if we decide to do a full marathon, we can set some money aside easier if we wait awhile. The time commitment to getting the long runs in. I know that some women (and men) can work full-time jobs and train for a marathon (or longer runs). Not me. I don't necessarily want to take THAT much time away from my husband when I don't see him very much the way it is. I also have been thinking about Squirt's first birthday coming up soon;...
