I love telephones because you don't have to look the person you're speaking to in the eye. In my youth I used to get told repeatedly I somehow wasn't listening or concentrating because I hated looking the person I was listening to directly in the face. Why on earth should I? I find it extremely offputting. I'm not talking about 5 minute conversations, I mean 1 or 2 hour ones. Somehow I never seem to be able to get to the same depths we reached on the phone with anyone I actually meet up with in real life... I have no idea why this is. Perhaps some overpaid headshrinker should do a study on it...
