something

Big A is forever telling me to not say certain things on the road.

Don't call me dear.
Don't gasp or shout; I'll think there's a deer.

Although these are paraphrased (and he claims he's never said the first one), these are the basis for this tale.
We went to the Husker game last night. Scratch that - we worked at the Husker game last night. We helped his aunt (and her church) sell backrests as a fundraiser. Big A has done this most of last year & all of this year so far. He loves it. You sell backrests until kickoff, then you watch the game, and pick up the rests after. You're there 90 minutes before game time and for about an hour or so after the game. And you sometimes get leftover food (Runzas and hotdogs and popcorn - please fine out what a Runza is for those of you who aren't from Nebraska....it's so yummy!).
Anyway...we went to the game & a few of our friends helped pick up the chairs voluntarily after so (with that help plus our amazing speed) it was done within 30-45 minutes.
To make this long story much shorter, we went to Walmart, Wendy's (for ice cream, of course), and to my in-law's to pick up Moose (oh how I missed my boy!). This is where it gets good.

Please keep in mind this is 1:30am....it's dark out. In the moonlight, on the side of the road, I see her. A doe. A beautiful doe eating on the side of the road.
It registered in my mind (mind you, this all happens really fast). "Oh he doesn't want me to say deer.....oh no!" I didn't know what to say.

So I hollered...."something!" Big A put the brakes on and we missed her as she dashed off into the night.

PAUSE What did I just say??

Something. Wow. Who says that? I giggled for awhile while Big A just said "it worked, didn't it?"
I thought it was funny! But we got home safely and showered and slept until this morning.

This is a Runza. THIS is a recipe for a Runza.

That's brilliant!
I find myself sometimes travelling along in the car and shouting 'cow' or 'tractor' - and then remember I don't have any of the children with me!

Visiting from SITs by the way. Off to have a root around.

Here from SITS, what is a runza?! :)
Preston said…
Funny story. Big A certainly is BIG. And I had to google Runza. I have to tell you that I was slightly disappointed because it's just a chain, something like Subway meets Checkers. Of course, that doesn't mean it's not tasty... Congrats of your SITS day!

LOL! "Something!!" That is hilarious!!

That's funny because my husband is just the opposite. He is always asking the kids, "Are you looking for deer?" Sometimes I think it is to distract them from fussing and bickering in the back seat, but still!
Brandy said…
LMAO!

My hubs says the same thing and he gets so mad when I point out the deer, but I'd rather him be mad then hit a deer.
Kate said…
Thats so funny! I love it. I moved to Central Virginia in the last year and there are TONS of deer here and I always freak out when I see them(I lived in the suburbs of Nashville where we didn't have to worry about crazy things like deer.), which freaks out my husband. I wonder what he would do if I yelled, "Something!"? I will have to try it.

Oh, that is hilarious! I am always worried about deer when driving at night. But what always gets me is listening to the radio. And the commercials will have sirens or some other strange noise...and I have to turn off the radio to see what it is...only to realize, it's not real :-)

LOL! That's great. My husband would get a kick out of this one. I usually can't process words when I think something is going to hit us, so I just utter weird sounds or say, "Babe!" It works though! =)

Found you via SITS!

Welllll ya know, when ya gotta say *something* you gotta say something. And it did work. Much better than my "ah! ah!" which usually doesn't work so well.

And the Runza's are the one thing I really miss about my Nebraska ex-bf.
Toots said…
Hillarious! I could totally see myself doing something like that . . . I'm constantly using "words" like "thingy" or hand me "that thing over there under the other thing, you know the THING." . . . . hehehe :-)

You know what, that is too funny. I never know what to say when something happens really fast. I just point and make weird noises or "press the brakes" that are on the passenger side. Hey at least you got a word out.

Isn't it something how guys are! My husband doesn't like me yelling or gasping either. I swear to you though there have been so many times if I hadn't have been with him and yelled we'd have read ended someone or something, amazes me sometimes how he drives without me without wrecking. haha..
This will be sorta long but I have to share what I did to him once! I guess it was kind of mean but I thought it was funny!
We were crossing a railroad track, he slowed way down and was looking both ways, about the time he got over the middle of the track I made the biggest train horn sound I could make. LOL...........He wasn't expecting it at all and it scared him so bad.
Guess you had to be there but it was so funny at the time.
Have a great day!

The lasagna I just can't make it as good as his mom!

happy SITS! hahaha this is hysterical. I've since moved from the land where deer roam free - but whenever I go back home I have to remind myself that I need to be on the lookout! My dh is the same way with gasping, sighing, any extraneous noises coming from my mouth while in the car. Now I have to find a Runza next time I drive through Nebraska! :0p

My husband hates it when I shriek or gasp while he's driving, he automatically thinks an 18 wheeler is going to plow in to us and starts to look around in a panic. "Something" is definitely better than nothing.

That's so funny! It makes me think of me and my Dh, who also doesn't like the me to say dear, or deer, or grab his arm, or gasp, or scream look out!

Also, I love runzas, although I had no idea they were called that! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

And Runzas look delish! Wish I wasn't trying to lose weight. lol

Hahaha! We don't get deer by the road where I am or I'm sure my husband would have the same rule. I always scare him by gasping LOUDLY when I just remembered something I need to do.
Jenni said…
That was funny. My husband has banned the gasps and such as well. I also must say, "after the truck you can go." As opposed to, "You can go after the truck." Apparently he has a trigger foot and might not hear the rest of the sentence!
Lisa @ Serah's said…

Oh deer, that's too funny. I think if my husband yelled, "Deer!" in the car I'd just say, "Honey, I'm right here; you don't need to--" (sentence cut off due to imminent collision with deer)
