The Zookeeper's Wife and heroism (giveaway)

I read "The Zookeeper's Wife" by Diane Ackerman about a year ago - rather, I listened to it while running. I fell in love with this true story of Antonina Żabińska and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński. They are the zookeepers at the Warsaw zoo in Poland during 1939. When the Nazi's arrive after Poland is invaded, they struggle to keep their beloved animals, their son, and their home. They end up working with the Resistance and "put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk."

They have made this wonderful book into a movie! Antonina's heroism throughout the book is extraordinary! Another woman who showed great heroism during World War II - Corrie ten Boom. She was a Dutch watchmaker and Christian who, along with her father and other family members, helped hide and save many Jews from the awful evil of the Holocaust. She even ended up in prison herself for these heroic actions.

Standing up for what you believe is right is difficult under good conditions but I was amazed when I read "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom and learned of her heroism. In a time when so many people stood aside and let evil overtake country after country, it's awesome that she was able to stand up for her God and not cave to terrorism and brutality.

I pray that I am able to let my light shine bright for Jesus in my life, just as Corrie ten Boom did. And that shouldn't be a difficult choice when I live in a place where persecution for my beliefs means maybe some people don't like you. That's something we should all be willing to face when it means believing and stand up for someone who gave His life for you.

Here is the trailer for the movie "The Zookeeper's Wife" starring Jessica Chastain and Johan Heldenbergh). I really am so excited about this movie and have been looking forward to it for awhile.

This looks so good! I'm glad you posted about it because I hadn't heard of it before. I'll have to see this one! My mother is a heroic woman that I have always looked up to. She has been through a lot of pain in one lifetime and she has never let that stop her from living life and loving us kids so well. She battled and survived breast cancer not once, but TWICE! (Probably from when I was about 4-7 years old or so.) I was little so I didn't really know what was going on but she did such a good job at caring and loving her children without letting us know how bad things really were -- all the while, she was the one who needed taken care of! Gosh, I get teary just thinking about how strong of a woman she was throughout those years. I have always said she is the strongest woman I have ever known! Gotta love my mamma. <3

Not relevant to this movie except for the zoo/animal aspect, but the first few moments of this trailer reminded me of Water for Elephants. That is such a timeless movie that I love to watch each year!

Heroic woman...well having altered my "perspective" I'd have to say Amy Carmichael. What great lengths she went to spread the gospel! -

A heroic woman would be Ruth from the Bible, as she left all she knew to follow and care for her mother-in-law.
