Dino Dan and Yo Gabba Gabba (review & giveaway!)

I had the opportunity to review two new DVDs and a board book from NCircle Entertainment: Dino Dan DVD and Yo Gabba Gabba (DVD and book). I wasn't expecting the latter, but I love working with NCircle so I went with the flow.

The new Yo Gabba Gabba DVD is called There's a Party in my City. Usually this is not a show in our repertoire. I just find it an odd show - the characters don't make sense to me. It seems loud and strange BUT kids love it (or so I've heard). I honestly did not let my children watch this show; I try to avoid shows that I don't want them to watch (like Calliou). But I will let Yo Gabba Gabba's reputation speak for itself. If you need 60 minutes to finish dinner/laundry/a book/a shower, by all means, I suggest you try this DVD. This high-paced, energetic show has the power to entertain your children.

We did read the Yo Gabba Gabba board book sent to us: Try, Try Again. I don't mind reading books about shows that I dislike - they seem less abrasive this way. This was a really cute book about Brobee (the green, striped one) getting upset over not being able to play a game correctly. His friends encouraged him to try again, over and over. Although this is a board book, I thought this book would be useful for Moose. He, too, gets upset when he doesn't get things right or if things get too hard (like riding his new bike with training wheels that lasted about 10 minutes with prodding the first time out).

Today the boys and I sat down to watch Dino Dan. This show is about Dan, a school-aged boy (3rd grade maybe?) who LOVES dinosaurs. He also sees them frequently, on the playground and around school. I didn't understand why he sees them all the time - does he have a really good imagination or a super power? Not sure on that. Dino Dan would be a cute novelty show for a school-aged kid who loves dinosaurs, but it really wasn't that interesting for my boys. Moose started to read a book. I will say that Squirt stayed relatively glued to the tv, but he will watch anything! The only thing I disliked about this show is that while their teacher was trying to give a spelling lesson, Dan went on and on and on about naming a dinosaur and how to name one. He went on so long that they didn't have their lesson. I think that's a bad example for kids (although not untrue as I remember getting teachers to talk about something they loved in order to avoid a lesson but we were a little older than that).

These weren't my favorite NCircle DVDs but perhaps they would work well for your family. I suggest researching them further by checking out NCircle Entertainment online. Or you can enter my giveaway for both DVDs and the board book!

Woops, don't think my first comment got submitted so here it is again:

We will occasionally watch Yo Gabba Gabba, but almost always with the volume turned WAY down. It usually has good social lessons, but definitely not my favorite show.

To pick from NCircle's DVDs is pretty easy. I would choose WordWorld because this is one of our favorite shows and it is only on Netflix sporadically.
