running updates
I haven't written about running lately. My apologies to my running blogging pals. I've still been going strong!
Big A and I and my older sister are running a half marathon in central Nebraska in June. I'm excited about running with my sister! I wish my little sister could run with us, but she's been batting injuries for quite some time now. Another perk to this race is that it's 15 miles from my parents' house so they'll be able to watch our boys the night before and day of the race. So nice to have that support (thanks Mom!). I'm hoping we'll have some cheerleaders out for us since I'm from that way...we'll see.
I ran a 10K over Easter weekend for a time of 57:56. Not bad! I started out way too fast, though, and couldn't maintain that speed. So I puttered out quickly, too. I finished, though, that was my ultimate goal. I have to remind myself that I'm not going to win a race! I know that sounds pessimistic but it's also realistic. I'm a middle-to-back of the pack type of gal. I don't run to race (I'd probably have to work much harder at it than I do), I run to run. I enter races to have fun and complete them.
Big A & I have signed up for a 10K over 4th of July weekend in our current home town. I'm excited about that; sounds like a pretty big deal around here. We also signed up for the Omaha half marathon again. I'm (again) debating the full marathon, have even emailed the director to see what to do if I decide to run the full. The nice thing is, is that the prices don't go up until July so I won't have to decide until after our half marathon in June. I could stair step my long runs right up to the full marathon so the timing would be good for me. I just don't know how much time during the week I'd have to commit to training.
Which brings me to the biggest thing that's happened since I started running. I've cut back my running days to 3 days a week. I do have an optional 4th day of running, but this is all for the sake of being more flexible for my husband's job. There was a period of a few weeks where he'd get sent out to a job site and I'd have to miss my runs or run very late or run on a full stomach (or very empty one). It was very hectic and frustrating for me, so I'm trying 3 days for sanity's sake. I'm also cross training with Jillian Michaels DVDs (not 100% that qualifies as cross training...but it's at the very least strength training). It's working, I just need to get the motivation to do the DVDs...watching Glee or some other fluffy show usually sounds better! ha! Today I'm supposed to run and XT but I'm planning on 5 miles and it's very windy outside. I could run inside to save some energy but it's beautiful and warm outside (other than the wind) so I think I'm going to suck it up and run outside.
I will say that my 10 mile run last Saturday was superb. I realized that I'd been trying to push myself to be all speedy for weeks...and I just needed to slow down (a little) and relax and enjoy it! Part of that was, I think, due to being competitive and running with a partner for awhile. I really like my partner (who is taking a break from running with me since all of my runs will be 5 miles or more from now until June), but I'm just a competitive person. So I'm glad I'll be running with myself for now. It's ok to try to run fast on shorter distances but long distance, I need to take it easy. Again, I'm not going to win or BQ or anything! I'm a recreational runner. :)
