letters to my boys

If you're unfamiliar with Mama Kat or her pretty much world famous writer's workshop, please check her/it out. It's pretty fantastic.
Anyway, this week, one of the prompts was to write a letter to my future teen. Some day I will have teenagers, that's a shock. I suppose while they are still small and cute, I should write my angsty boys a letter to remember why I love them even when they hate me.

Dear Moose,
It seems like only moments ago you were three years old, waiting for your first day of preschool in the midst of a blizzard. I was moments away from sending you off into the big, bad world trying my best to help you overcome autism.
We were thrown into the midst of this disorder without a life vest, but you worked so hard. At first it was just sounds that you finally caught on to after months of work. Then your eye contact improved and you developed an imagination - a very active one! One minute you were completing a whole finger match book and the next you're so close to graduation.
I cannot tell you how proud I am of you. Each small step you've taken has come from a strength I can only look in awe to. You are so amazing, my son. Your whole life is before you and I know you can do, honestly, anything you want because you work hard. Please don't ever lose that dedication.
I am so happy to be your mom! I love you!
Mama

Dear Squirt,
Oh wow, my little tropical storm has grown into a hurricane. You are just a whirlwind of energy and fun; always on the move. You started out that way, too, just kicking as hard as your little newborn legs would go. Then you were such an active toddler, always spinning and running and falling and moving. You are poetry in motion, my sweet boy. You never give up and always push forward. You never accepted that you were too little to do anything! You just went ahead and did it anyway (even as I stood by cringing and praying you wouldn't get hurt).
I know we butt heads and push each other's limits, but there is no other person I'd rather push my buttons. I know that even when I'm angry or you're angry, we still love each other. I can't wait to see how far you go - because any person with that much energy will do great things!
And let me tell you, son, I not only love you but I like you very much. Thank you for being so sweet and funny and charming and just wonderful.

I echo your same exclamation over here, how did YOUR little Squirt get quite so big! It's amazing how fast they grow and change and wreak havoc and melt hearts.

Lovely letters, dear. Save them for their teenage selves to read.

I would think they would melt even the hardest of angst filled teenage hearts.
