Road ID (review & giveaway!)

Road ID is probably the best idea ever for an athlete, especially those who train in the outdoors.

This is straight from the Road ID website "Our Story" page:

The inspiration for Road ID was born in the fall of 1999. For my father, the inspiration was his concern for me as I trained for my first marathon. For me, the inspiration was a black, King Kong size pick-up truck that I nearly came face to face with on a long Saturday run.

Earlier that fall, I began training for my first marathon. My father worried about me logging all those miles and would often tell me to “be safe.” One day, he suggested that I carry an ID so that he could be notified if I had an accident while training. Of course, I dismissed that suggestion. I thought: “What could possibly happen to me while running?”

So, there I was, in a ditch, on the side of the road, having nearly been hit by the aforementioned pick-up truck. From that ditch, my father’s suggestion to carry ID started to make a tremendous amount of sense.

Luckily I was OK. But, what if the truck had hit me? I would have been rushed to the local hospital as “John Doe.” Without proper ID, family members and friends could NOT be contacted. Likewise, my Medical records could NOT be accessed at the hospital. How long would I lay there unidentified? This freaked me out.

A few months later, from my father’s damp basement, he and I launched Road ID. To us, Road ID has always been far more than a business. We are on a
mission to save lives.

So you see for yourself this isn't just a business, it's a mission. There is a true purpose for wearing a Road ID. As a runner, I felt so comfortable wearing it. It was just like my watch, I hardly knew it was there but it gave me a piece of mind that if I passed out or (heaven forbid) got hit by a car, or even stung by a bee that when someone found me (and I run on a road with a fair amount of traffic with people going to work), that I would be taken care of. Paramedics would know who I am, where I'm from, how to contact my husband and my mom. They would know I was born in 1986 and have a possible bee allergy. They would also get that I'm a Christian. It just makes me feel safe to have some form of ID on me without carrying around (and probably losing) my driver's license.

don't be alarmed when you get your Elite ID and it's huge; you have to cut it down to size.

Road ID is probably the best idea to have if you're a parent, especially with young kids.

However, I had another purpose for really wanting to have a Road ID. I don't wear it just when I run. I wear it when I'm out with my kids. Let's say I'm at the park with them and I get stung by a bee. I have a severe reaction and someone hears my son crying for his mama. They come to see what's wrong...long story short - they will have all the information they need right there. My name, my husband's number, my mom's number, my allergies (or possible in my case). My husband can be called to pick up our children and I will also be taken care of.

I'm a mom, I worry. I think we all do. We worry about strangers approaching our kids. We read about it in the newspaper and tabloids. It's all over the news. But what if something happens to YOU? How will they know who to call so someone can come take care of your kids? And if your kids are young like mine, they can't say "my dad is Big A and he works at the feed store." What then?
For a list of Top 10 Reasons to wear a Road ID, read this.

Something to think about, right?

On the original IDs you get 6 lines of print on the sterling silver ID.

Well, if you do decide that an ID like this is necessary, I honestly urge you to think about Road ID. I have the Wrist ID Elite in red (which is very cute; I've had many compliments on it so far), but there are so many other products that may fit you better. There's the Road ID Sport, the Shoe ID, the FIXX ID, Ankle ID, Shoe Pouch ID (see all products here). You can get the interactive or original editions (I chose the original).

Prices vary on the different products but are really reasonable for the peace of mind that it gives you. The Wrist ID Sport, Shoe ID, Shoe Pouch ID, and Ankle ID are all $19.99 a piece, the Wrist ID Elite is $29.99, the FIXX ID is $24.99. You may also want to check out their Firefly products - reflective gear for those early mornings or late night runs. A lot of cool things to check out on the website.

Trust me when I tell you the customer service with Road ID is fantastic. I accidentally put my cell number instead of my husband's (it looked like the right number, it was familiar) and they got me a replacement ID (just the ID not the band) so quickly! I really appreciate that when I felt like such a dork.

ALSO, I've been told about a special opportunity that I wanted to share with you, my dear readers:
Now that summer has finally arrived GoLite is giving outdoor fanatics 93 chances to bag free gear. Of all the seasons, summer is the lightest. To show their devotion, GoLite’s giving away a FREE piece of gear every day, all summer long.

A safety tip- never stop for someone on the side of the road if you are alone. Do call 911 and get them the help they need.

I really want to win one for my son with autism. He is gone a fair amount of time at camp or school and with him being nonverbal it makes his safety even more challenging.
I think he would like the bright red wrist elite!

My number one safety tip is to make sure that you have someone that knows about where you are and about when you will return. That way they can check your route if they haven't heard from you in a while.

I like the Fixx ID. Very cool.
I've got my eye on the Wrist ID Elite in blue.
Best safety tip I'd have is to run against the traffic if you have to/want to run on the road. You're watching for them much more than they're watching for you.

I used to run listening to my iPod, but I've stopped doing that lately because 1) iPods aren't always allowed in all races (and in triathlons, which I do) and 2) It allows me to hear what's going on around me better so I can watch out for traffic if I'm running on the road & hear other cyclists coming when I'm biking or running on a trail with bikes.

I want the wrist ID elite in yellow or red, I'm not sure yet. And I love their interactive thing - we're military and my emergency person is leaving the country soon!
Lindsey said…
I do many of my runs on a military post, so we have to wear reflector belts on post. I also make sure I run facing traffic, and I have a little flashing light that I can attach to my reflector belt for when it's not light enough out.

My safety tip ~ Always let someone know when and where you run.
Rion said…
Oh, after debating whether I'd even need this or not, I decided to enter after finding out we have a perfect trail right next to our place but its sort of secluded in places and scary.

Anyway, I went to the website and I totally think the ankle one is best. Neoprene is always good, plus, the red color is stylin.

And I totally do follow you on twitter, tho I have decided I dont have much in the way of random ramblings to rant about!

The way I stay safe when I am out walking (I havent graduated to running yet!) is to always carry my cell phone. I actually keep the GPS on, on the cell phone, because if I was lost, that could locate me.
