who you gonna call...

when you come home and find the front door open? If you're like me, you call 911. I mean, I have 2 small kids with me - how do I know who might be inside?

We left this morning to go to the Humane Society to look at puppies & kitties (it took too long. probably won't do that alone again). We were gone for an hour and a half or so. I pull up, unbuckle Moose, and tell him to go inside. That's when I notice it. Our front door is wide open.

My mom alarms go off. I call him back and let him "drive" while I call 911 and they say they'll send an officer. I feed the baby hoping no one will come out of our house. I'm freezing my butt off when an officer pulls up.

I told him how long we'd been gone, we hadn't been inside, and I swore I locked the door. He says he'll check it out, asks if we have a basement, and goes toward our house. He pulls out his firearm. Wow, talk about intimidating. There has never been a gun in my home.

He's gone a few minutes and comes out and says it looks ok to him. Tells me to come on inside and check it out. He asks if he can help me carry anything inside - yeah, I haul a lot around. I said it was alright and I come in and set the baby down. I check to see if our money stashes are still around (they are) and our computer and tv are still there. So nope, no burglar. Just a mom who forgot to shut the door. Oops.

I apologized but he said that was fine, that this is what they want. I guess it's better safe than sorry. But thank you LPD for making this mommy feel better and making sure there are no monsters in our closets (he checked our closets, too).

Wow!! That's a bit scary. In our town, I don't worry too much about anyone breaking in, but I think I'd wonder if the door was wide open :)

Holy Cow! Thank Goodness everything was okay!
Us moms...we get so absent minded working about everything we need for each child, hubs included, before we leave, we don't worry about stuff like that!
So glad everything is alright. You definitely did the right thing.
Wow..that must have been very scary. I am glad it was just an oops, but you did the right thing be calling 911 because you never know.

I have an award waiting for you at http://flyinggigglesandlollipops.blogspot.com/2009/10/one-lovely-blog-award.html I know how busy us Mamas get, so please do not feel pressured, I just want to let you know you have a lovely blog!
Scary stuff!

My 2 yr old managed to get the Chicago fire dept. here once by pressing the button on our alarm keypad. Ya, my cheeks pretty much matched the color of the fire truck!

I cannot tell you how many times that has happened to me but it was my husband who left the door wide open. He does this like once a week...it's either the front door or the garage. He swears each time that he shut it and I'm like, "no obviously you didn't".

You did the right thing by calling the police. I, on the other hand, stupidly enter the house screaming "I have my cell phone on me and I'm dialing 911 right this minute". Stupid, stupid, stupid!

That must of been so scary! I cant imagine what was going through your mind!!!

My other half has left the door open before luckily I noticed as the car was backing out of the drive. Everything would of been gone by the time we got back as we were going on holiday!!

I bet the boys found the police officer exciting stuff?
