The Very Hungry Caterpillar

It has recently come to my attention that this is an older book. I personally never read it as a kid or remember it from school, but it has become a classic in our house. Moose adores this book and almost has it completely memorized! It's such fun to read to him or to listen to him "read" it to himself.

I was reading in my newest Redbook installment about Jumpstart (jstart.org) a "nonprofit education organization" that is basically trying to close the academic gap between lower-income families and more affluent neighborhoods.
On October 8, they are sponsoring their 4th annual Read for the Record event. They want 1 million people worldwide to read the same book - The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Apparently Meredith Viera, LL Cool J, Matt Lauer, and Mary Louise Parker have already signed up - and so have I.

You can buy the book online or in store through Walmart. You can donate a copy to a school. And/or you can pledge to read with kids (your own, neighbor kids, nieces, nephews, grandkids, etc) on October 8. Check out the website here for more information.
I'm planning on reading it to my boys on the 8th but also want to plan some activities for Moose to do along with the book. Wish it was warmer outside so the butterflies would still be around...but we'll just have to make do with these ideas from the Eric Carle official website.

I don't know but somehow I never read it either as a child- but I always hear about it. I must get it!

I hope you'll stop by Blog For A Cure over at www.whoknewreviews.blogspot.com! It's a great way to get new followers, win some prizes and support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!
I remember reading this book in school!

I remember seeing it when I student taught, too--For a craft, students made their own very hungry caterpillar mosaic. There was an outline of the caterpillar and they glued little pieces of green and red tissue paper to his body.

Their projects turned out cute, but I'm not sure glue and tissue paper are appropriate for younger children.
