booster seats

I feel like we've spent a fortune on car seats!

We have an infant carrier/car seat that used to hook up to our stroller (before that crapped out). We spent $100 on the set.

We have Moose's convertible car seat (backward/forward facing up to 40lbs). We spent about $40 on that.

Now, he's almost 40 pounds (seriously like 38 pounds), so we need to get a convertible car seat/booster seat that will hold him until he's 100 lbs. That's anywhere from $40+.

I wish we would have actually realized how much money we would be spending (and how quickly Moose would get so big). And this is idealized because we couldn't have afforded this until now. But I would have got one of those 3-in-1 car seats. Infant seat/forward car seat/booster seat sets for like $240. It seems like a lot but we'll have spent about $220 when we're done with this business. I wish we could just sell the others and buy one of those, but then we'll need them when the new baby comes.

Any recommendations on convertible car seat/booster seats?

Depending on how tall Moose is, Graco makes a convertible booster seat that uses the regular seatbelt, however it has a back on it. I have one that I bought for Adriana for $39.00 at Toys R Us, but I'm sure you could find it for cheaper. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2861774

It's very easy to switch from car to car and she's told me that it's pretty comfortable.

Also I've seen this one at Walmart and looked into getting it for Adriana. This one will accommodate kids with the built in seatbelt til 35 pounds and then you can start using the regular car seat belt until 80 pounds. I'm pretty sure you can remove the back for when he gets older. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=1943168&findingMethod=rr

Hope this helped somewhat! Are you ready for the new baby yet!?

I don't know much, but I would def. recomend the conversion type, that can be used from birth - 2 years

Two words. Garage sale. I have been garage sale-ing the last week and have seen sooo many car seats. Anywhere from $5 to $20. I would suggest going to the ones in the south part of town because that's where I have had the best luck...especially if you are looking for other baby stuff. Good luck.

I just stumbled upon your blog, but thought I'd throw in my two cents. I'm a HUGE fan of car seats that'll keep the baby in the harness for as long as possible so I have (and I recommend, even tho they're about $150 & up) the Graco Nautilus 3-in-1. They will keep your child forward facing w/the 5point harness up to 65lbs (provided the height requirements are met as well) and then it's both a high back booster and backless booster after that. You can start them in this car seat whenever they're old/big enough to be forward facing (tho rear is best) so it can definitely last a long while.

Sorry if I sounded too preachy, I know before I had kids, I thought it was strange to keep your kids in car seats past probably 4, but now I'd do anything to keep my kids in them longer since they'll be that much safer. Good luck on your hunt!

And then, I wouldn't recommend garage saling for car seats. You never know what the previous owner did with it. Where it was stored, etc. And car seats expire. If you do buy a used one, just make sure to check the date. You want to make it worth your while.
