potty training

Alright, I'm not in a real hurry to do this whole potty training thing, especially when we're moving. I'm not planning on starting for a few months, until stuff settles in dear ol' Virginia. However, I would like to start thinking about it. It seems all the kiddos I know Moose's age are beginning at least so I should probably figure it out.

Where do I start? My mom has no tips because she had 3 daughters, no sons. So I don't even know how to start. Should I start when he can't even say "potty" or "poop" or anything close?

Any ideas will be appreciated.

I've potty trained 5, and I can PROMISE you that when MOOSE is ready to potty train, he will. You won't have to do a thing except provide him access to the bathroom and lots of positive reinforcement. I've never given stickers, candy, etc. just a big smile and praise.

My advice from my own expreience with my son, is don't rush it.... the more you push, the harder it will be.... I promise that when he is ready, and he will have his own time table, he will let you know.... good luck... hows baby # 2 doing.....

well - my oldest, i tried and tried but wasnt very good about being consistent. Finally he turned 4 and I said, "Happy Birthday. Here's some really awesome star wars underpants. don't pee or poo-poo in them. you're a big boy now." he said, "ok mommy." and he never did.

my middle was afraid of the potty. But i set him on it first thing in the morning, every morning while his bladder was still full. One morning I rushed him to the potty cuz his pull-up was still dry, so i knew he must have had to go. he did - and was potty-trained every since.

Everyone says girls are easier. not for me. my daighter was hard. mostly because she was afraid of the potty. i didn't want to have to buy a little kid potty - cuz i didn't want to have to deal with it. but she was finally 3... i bought her a pink one and she went and that was that.

tips: talk about going potty and him being a big boy. let him sit on the potty while you're running his tubby water. Also let him sit on it first thing in the morning and right before bed time.

Those are the only tips I have. I admit, i wasn't one to really push and push for potty training. I figured if the parent takes the kid potty every 2 hours, wipes their bum, helps them wash their hands then it's the parent who is potty trained - not the kid. hee hee. oh - one thing i wouldn't do if i had to do over again. I wouldn't buy pull-ups. Or perhaps i would only use them when going out of the house, like to the store or something. my kids had them, and i think because it pulls moisture away from them they didn't care if they had an accident. Verses wet underpants - they would probably hate that feeling, though it would be more work for mom/dad. also - another tip i just remembered... don't let it get you frustrated. my sis used to get irritated with her kids for having accidents. i am of the attitude that they are learning, and that is why it is called an "accident". now, when they are 10 and doing it - well then i guess it's time to get irritated - hahaha!

anyway - good luck! sorry this is so long.

My little one is now 2 1/2 and my latest trainee yet. He certainly puts out "signals" when he does #2 but everytime I ask him if he wants to sit on the potty, he freaks. So, I know he is not ready. As far as #1, yesterday, on his own accord, he took his diaper off and peed in the toilet. ALL day! Like Angie, we gave lots of high 5s and praise!
You will know when it's time!

Girl, you've probably got time. On average, boys potty train later than girls. All I can say is let your expectations go out the window and follow Angie's lead. When he feels it's time is when it's time.

I can't stress this enough. My boy was just 3 when he did it. After I gave up forcing the issue.

I did the majority of the potty training with A. The thing that helped the most was lots and lots of encouragement and explanation that accidents are okay.
Her dad once threw her into a freezing cold bath on purpose as punishment for having an accident and she was terrified to go to the potty after that. I could have killed him.
Pull a training potty out and see if he's interested..maybe one of those potty training movies with Elmo could help explain it to him?

Good luck!!

i agree. i keep picturing in my head this long, sandy donkey or camel ride and how dangerous and uncomfortable it must have been. wondering if she sat up nights worried or scared, how many times did she snuggle into Joseph's arms to seek comfort and how many of those times was he like "Oh God, please help me. i don't have any idea what's going on?" i have this yearning to see what those lives looked like day to day. i have this aching in the pit of my stomach that says "if you could just see this, you would understand so much more about who I am. if i could just be there with Him, if i could just watch her walk through that, if i could just feel what they were feeling...i don't know. i'm just hungry to know better the life of Jesus...not just what i can read but His heart through all things. what was it like to struggle with everything man faces while being the perfect Son of the Most High? what was it like growing up for Him? sorry...i'm rambling...i just can't seem to get it out of my head. :)

how's the packing going?

My son was potty trained at just over two years old. One day he told me he wanted to wear the underwear that we had bought him, and we never went back to diapers or looked back!

Mostly he was ready for it... and it only took about five days, can you believe it?! I did the sticker chart and rewards, but not for long.
